When you're composing, you often want to try out and compare different options in one place -- a different chord voicing or melody, for example. I usually just place the different options somewhere else in the score, but this is not a very good solution. It would be really cool if you create alternates for a measure or group of measures.
It could work like this:
1. select one or more measures
2. hit a Create Alternate button (in the measure menu). Two things happen: An indicator appears somewhere above the measure, which, when clicked, allows you to select the active alternate. And an alternate measure is created, which is a just a copy of the original, and that alternate is selected.
3. You are now editing the alternate measure. You can click the same indicator to switch between alternates and add and remove alternates.
Only one is ever visible at once, and it is applies to both editing and playback. The active alternate is saved so other users see and hear the intended version.
Bonus points if the number of measures can be changed for alternates, for example, to compare a two measure and a four measure intro.
As a software developer, I would guess this would be a ton of work to implement, but I think it would be extremely valuable.
A lot of great suggestions here – we are looking carefully at these!
I believe I'm the one who submitted this. Six and a half years is a pretty long time, but... better late than never! Still looking forward to this.
I was coming in to add this as a suggestion, and found that it's already here... I believe I was actually the person who suggested this almost four years ago. It's amazing that this hasn't been addressed yet!
We have overhauled our Search option! Read all about it here: https://notes.noteflight.com/noteflight-improves-search-features/
Note: we have not yet implemented all of the ideas listed here, but many of them are still in our future plans. Stay tuned.
In the meantime, enjoy the much-improved search functionality!
