Multiple note durations on same beat

Example, in most scores you might see something like this: 1. Beat #1 has a whole note of say "C", however you want say a "G" to begin a series of say 1/8th notes ON that same beat while the "C" remains sustained. / This is a very common sight in most piano scores and prevents and scary looking web of slurs and ties.
