Show if a score is original or not.
I don't want to look at a bunch of crappy pop music transcriptions or hear another arrangement of blue moon. I want to be able to view only ORIGINAL scores other people have created. I am sorry I don't know how to implement this (tags maybe?) but it would be nice for me to be able to not see all the crap that i've heard before and see only original works.

@ Ben - That's not practical and not rewarding for the people who ARE composing original music. For example, I would have to go back and add the tag "original" to every single one of the 170+ scores I have public as of now. The arrangement composers aren't nearly as prolific, so why not make THEM add tags to their scores rather than to composers' scores?

Just because they're original doesn't mean they won't be crappy
It isn't that hard to find original songs try searching "original"
Please don't add this I don't want a massive copyright culling

If a score is not "original", then it is illegal to score it, at least according to the Music Publisher's Association (MPA), they have shut down numerous music sites and they will do the same to noteflight, it is just a matter of time, especially considering the large number of copyrighted songs that are on the site.

Perhaps there could be separate tags for transcriptions, originals, and arrangements?

While transcribing someone's else's music can be a valuable educational tool (I did it myself for years), it would be fantastic if there was a tag for original compositions. They're the only thing I want to hear and critique.

Allowing the community to tag content with an enumerated list of tags like the ones outlined below would allow search results to be narrowed by a "tag" dimension. If I had to implement this feature, I would think that would be an easy and accurate implementation. It would also give you a "browse by tag" feature for the site.

Good idea..........but do you mean see if the song is an original 'interpretation' or just an original 'song' someone came up with?

Or you could just not click on songs that have been transcribed. But it takes some skill if you transcribe by ear.

Maybe there could be a different browser fo transcriptions and a different one for original scores

perhaps there can be a few categories, like:
transcription
arrangement
interpretation/"remix"/"mashup"
original score -

I couldn’t agree more with the need for a button or selection option to show original scores. It should be pretty simple to install and would be of great help to those of us who would rather listen popular music on the radio, not on NoteFlight. Just to clarify, I don’t want to disallow popular music from being on browsable on NoteFlight, just include a subcategory for original scores.

arranging popular melodies can be very original, just listen to a medley by Bill Holcombe.

Now I am not completely opposed to non-originals, as long as there was a creative change to the music in the adaptation process. It can even help others finding sheet music for the song. But separate folders sounds like a great idea because when I see a very good song I want to know if it is original.

As in http://www.joelonsoftware.com/items/2009/11/01.html you presumably want to make a web app that people are passionate about.
I would love to use a web app that exposed me to original scores, but noteflight is a unusable wasteland to me. It seems everything is a transcription of Iron Man or the Titanic theme. I don't care about that crap. If i want to hear a bad midi version of those songs, kill me, I've gone retarded.
I acknowledge lots of your users do use the site to post these transcriptions. I'm not saying ban them. Just make a simple checkbox or something that users can indicate if their score is original or note.
Don't alienate the transcribers, this isn't an either or decision. Just give me some way to use the site the way I want to. Give us a way to signify that a score is original.
The people who care, who are passionate about original scores, will use this feature. -

i guess I agree, not that people shouldn't transcribe things, because noteflight is very useful for that (I do that mostly) but that it should be possible to tag works as original, as well as use custom tags, but that's different…

Maybe a simple icon next to the score name to indicate that it is original. However there would need to be a review process to make sure people weren't labeling copies as originals.

I agree wholeheartedly. I see a huge amount of scores in the "Browse Scores" section that are merely transcriptions and not original work. I am here to get inspired by others' fresh creativity, not listen to tunes I already know... We need the ability to sort by whether the score is original or a transcription as well.
