Import MIDI
I want to be able to bring in MIDI files -- there are more scores available in MIDI than in any music notation format.

i cannot import any midi files. ive tried and it is looking for a score type file and wont recognize any of my midi or wav files. id like to take a midi recording and just import in and make sheet music. maybe this isnt the program for this. i will search around

I have only just tried the MIDI import and it worked pretty well except for triplets that seem to be ignored?

First off, this is one of the best music-notation programs, online or otherwise, I've ever used, possibly the best. As such, I want to be able to use it in conjunction with the numerous scores I've already started on my home computer. My software at home saves only in the MIDI format, so I need to be able to import MIDI to keep working on these pieces using Noteflight. I know you're already working on this; I just want to add to the call for this feature to bolster support for your efforts, and possibly raise the priority of MIDI import.

Exmid is not helpful, actually, it only translates MIDI into XML without changing the nature of the information in any way. We already can read MIDI files; it's the subsequent processing of the MIDI data that is a challenge. Anyway, we're working on it!

Perhaps http://freshmeat.net/projects/exmid/ is of some use to you. I haven't tested it, but it should allow batch convert, after which the xml files are open for inspection. (Sources, last update on 12-Dec-2007)

Finale can't even import midi files accurately. However if Noteflight figured out how to make it work, I would use it as much or more than I use Finale.

When we do this, we will be supporting type 1 MIDI only. Initially we would probably not map the GM instruments, and it will be up to the user to assign specific Noteflight instruments after the import. However we would capture the original instrument numbers to export again correctly. Channel 10 drums should import correctly as percussion staff, but no predictions on sound effects.

im sorry for spamming my comments. if youre considering midi, all the GM instruments will have to be supported eh? the percussive and sound effect pads pose as a challenge then. a single track for channel 10 doesnt sound so hard. but after transcribing instruments 120-128, notation would be difficult to read, nonsensical. also do you plan on suporting the GS/GX extensions (General Midi Level 2)?

type 2 midi (the rarest type) will have trouble importing. type 0 midis only have 1 channel. so there would have to be a split hands option that wont work in favor when more then 2 instruments are in 1 channel. there are converters that convert type 0 to 1. ive never used them and do not know how well they work. type 1 is the most common and widely supported midi, stick with that.

MIDI can be translated into a score. I import MIDI's into Finale Notepad all the time. I can be a little choppy, but it is universal.

MIDI can be translated into a score, although usually the results require a great deal of massaging by hand before they are musically acceptable.

I'm not sure if midi can be translated directly onto a score. I may be wrong but my understanding was that it stored event sequences and timing information. (Instead information about which notes belong to which measures) I guess this means the song could be interpreted differently for different tempo's

I'm keen on midi compatability too, more important than XML, though with Flash I can imagine it's a tough one to crack! Great app.
