The problem is not only related to PDF. On Debian linux 6.0 with Iceweasel 3.5.16 and on Ubuntu 11.4 with Firefox 5.0 you only can print to the physical intalled installed printers, as ethan said one year ago. :-/

As a workaround, have a look here: http://mediakey.dk/~cc/ubuntu-print-to-pdf-or-pdf-export. It takes ages to get the file, but should work.... (BTW, the PDF file will be printed into ~/PDF directory).

Interestingly, you can print directly to a .PDF driver from MS Explorer, but not from Google Chrome. Fortuntately, I don't care as much about the elegance of the technology, as long as it gets the job done.

Noteflight's inability to print to PDF is pretty much a deal breaker for me. I tried PDFCreator but that didn't work for me either. The only workaround was to open Noteflight in Firefox 4.0 and print to Microsoft XPS; then I could open the .xps file and print that to PDF. Doesn't work in other browsers.

Not being able to print to PDF natively in Noteflight is almost a deal breaker. I tried using PDFCreator but that didn't work either. The only workaround that worked (today, at least) was to open Noteflight in Firefox 4.0 and choose Microsoft XPS Document Writer as printer. I can then open the .xps file and print that to PDF. Doesn't work in IE or Chrome, though.

Contact your school's IT support and inform them that Noteflight IS an educational site. Imagine a tech department blocking ink in past centuries! Install PDF Creator at home if you have Windows, or check the pdf function in OSX as explained below.

Another option is to export from Noteflight as MusicXML to an installed application such as Musescore http://musescore.org/ - that way you can keep your formatting and continue to edit without an internet connection. You can import it back again into Noteflight and keep all the excellent collaborative tools only Noteflight offers.

I agree... i'm a music student and my printer is broken, so i usually print stuff at my school. Sadly, my school has all "non-educational" sites blocked so i can't get on noteflight. If i could save my scores as PDF Files, put them on my flash-drive and print them out at school, that would be SOOOOOO helpful for my performances. thanks (:

you can download a pdf writer off of the internet... Cute Pdf
when its downloaded, you can click print score.
when choosing printer, choose the pdf writer!

As Ethan mentioned, this does NOT work under Linux Ubuntu. The Noteflight print dialogue is incomplete and will not pick up the normal printer options that are available through firefox or any other program. Thus, I can print to PDF in any program EXCEPT Noteflight.

what if you used Lilypond as a backend for the printing process (as a web app)? I think that would be an amazing collaboration that could bring a lot of benefits to both projects: Noteflight would get wonderful typesetting capabilities, Lilypond would get increased accessibility and use.

You could let Lilypond do the typesetting and create the PDF or Postscript file. At that point, the user could decide what they want to do with their impeccably type-set score :).

Don't know if it's possible, but I think it would be AMAZING.

        hi Joe,

I was just going to suggest "enable print to PDF" -- I run Linux (Ubuntu 9.10) and Firefox 3.5 but the Noteflight print dialog doesn't give me my "print to file" options. It only sees the physical printers installed on the system.

furthermore, the only options it gives are "page range." No quality settings, etc.

It would be great if I could use the normal print dialog that Firefox uses, to select whether I want a physical or file print, and choose the quality, etc.

This is not feasible yet due to lack of documented PDF support in the Flash Player. However, on the Mac and Linux you can print to PDF, and on Windows you can do the same if you get hold of one of the various free PDF print drivers.
